There are plastic dish drainers and then there are the stainless steel drainers. The plastics can be cheaper and is the answer for those who are tight with the budget. The stainless steel are a little more expensive but not by much.
Differences
The plastic dish drainer may be cheaper, lighter and can come in all sorts of attractive colors. However it can be the breeding ground for mold and mildew which somehow grows better in a plastic medium. The only way to get rid of it would be to use warm water with soap, bleach, vinegar, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Simply soak the drainer in this solution and then scrub clean. This will kill the mildew and the mold; however they can come back and grow again. If that happens, just do the same process all over again or until the plastic starts to get brittle and breaks apart.
Stainless steel dish drainers are hardier than the plastic ones. They can last several years if they are well maintained and they don’t grow the mildew. Simply scrub with soap and off all the grime goes. There is no need for the soaking in a special solution. However, this can be a little more expensive than the plastic kinds and for those who do not like the utilitarian look; this may not be the right choice.
There are also different models to choose from. There are the free standing, those which can be placed in the sink, those which are collapsible and those which are integrated into wood that can be complimentary to the country look.
